Merry Christmas from Modern Times: The San Diego brewery is finally opening its Oakland taproom.
The colorful new space at 2410 Valdez St. near Lake Merritt, called Modern Times House of Perpetual Refreshment, will offer 34 taps of a variety of beers. Offerings include year-round and seasonal brews as well as special releases, says Dan Reed, a spokesperson for the company.
"Draft selections can always vary slightly from location to location," Reed tells SFGATE, "but our Oakland homies can expect to be getting the same dazzling array of beers that our other locations enjoy, plus a few surprises here and there."
One surprise may come in the form of fresh cold brew coffee on tap and coffee beans to go, available in the brewery's onsite "mini-mart." Food won't be served, but customers can bring in their own.
In May, Modern Times revealed that the forthcoming Oakland space would resemble the brewery's North Park (San Diego) Flavordome taproom. Now open, the brewery is detailing more about its design.
Each of Modern Times' six existing locations in California and Oregon has a different look and aesthetic, though all rely on decor created by "found objects" like post-its or silverware. Oakland, however, will appear a little different from the others. While most of the other taprooms utilize one large-scale art installment as a centerpiece, Perpetual Refreshment's "focal point becomes the maximal use of color, rather than one single piece," says Amy Krone, Modern Times' director of arts & crafts.
Oakland's bar will be a "psychedelic color party" wherein the room will be color-blocked with vibrant, immersive teal, pink and orange "while also using everyday objects and geometric shapes to create interest and a feeling of 'things are not what they seem' upon closer inspection," she adds.
Essentially, as Reed explains, "we crammed as much of each color into its respective section as we possibly could."

Modern Times opened in San Diego's Point Loma neighborhood in 2013. It grew swiftly, and early on became a major presence in California's craft beer scene known for its imposing roasty imperial stouts, citrusy IPAs and easy-drinking goses. Since then, the brewery's cans have been widely distributed across California and other states throughout the Pacific Northwest.
Oakland, however, is its second-largest market in California, so opening a taproom in the East Bay seemed like an easy call.
"To finally have a physical presence here will be a boon to our loyal retailers, dozens of future bottle club members, and online sale participants as well," said Chris Sarette, Modern Times' chief operations officer, in April.
The project has been about a year in the works, and now that the opening has finally arrived, Reed says the team is "immensely excited."
"It's been quite a journey getting this thing rolling," he says, "and we couldn't be more psyched to finally show everyone what we've been working on."
The opening comes about six weeks ahead of San Francisco Beer Week, the widely encompassing celebration of craft beer in the greater Bay Area. Reed adds that the brewery is excited to participate in the event with its own new space, and will be planning a number of special parties for the occasion.
But the first step for the House of Perpetual Refreshment was just to open. After finalizing a few last touches, the taproom is now open, right before the holidays.
