11/30/2019 – The enjoyment to be gained from solving a well-crafted chess composition can be seen from the sentiment that closes this Study of the Month column. After a long day of work at the board, what does a hungry chess player require? "Something to eat from the pub and something to solve from Matouš". Study of the Month columnist SIEGFRIED HORNECKER dives into the live and work of Mario Matouš.

Endgames of the World Champions from Fischer to Carlsen Endgames of the World Champions from Fischer to Carlsen

Let endgame expert Dr Karsten Müller show and explain the finesses of the world champions. Although they had different styles each and every one of them played the endgame exceptionally well, so take the opportunity to enjoy and learn from some of the best endgames in the history of chess.

Study of the Month: November 2019

As always, feel free to skip to the end and enjoy replaying the studies, if that's your preference.

While some chess players, notably Diemer, delved into the arcane arts, the pantheistic belief is that the spirit of God is in everything, and most religions agree that at least living beings are made from the divine breath. In that sense the artistic endgame studies of a chess composer, but also the fierce battles between two players, can be described as manifestations of spirit.

In the broadest sense the definition of magic is the change of the world by means of the spirit, “the Science and Art to cause change in conformity with will” (Aleister Crowley; although Donald Michael Kraig refused the definition as too broad), so the beautiful endgame studies of our protagonist today can be described as modern magic.

Matouš, who has created nearly 300 endgame studies (versions and corrections included), was born on June 16th, 1947, as son of two language teachers in a town 55km north-east of Prague. As intellectuals, the family suffered under the Communist regime, so very early in his life the mother was jailed for two years for purely political reasons, with the entire family persecuted. Father Matouš had to work for little money and Mario with his siblings went to nurseries for some time. Later on, Mario declined the “Pioneer” youth organizations to attend religious work instead. Due to the revenge of the regime in not allowing appropriate education, Mario had to find manual labour later, a struggle that accompanied him all his life as he wasn’t skilled there. Having learnt chess at the age of nine, one of his chess contacts got him an occupation after Mario had finished national service. In 1968, he became a master chess player and in 1971 won the Central Bohemian championship, qualifying for the semi-finals of Czechoslovakia. In the hardships, Mario developed a humour appreciated by his chess friends, which might also have influenced his composing.

Shortly thereafter, as IM Petr Špaček — who was friends with Matouš — recalled, according to Emil Vlasák, a chess tournament saw Matouš appearing in a suit after he had just attended a wedding. Of course, he was asked whose wedding: “My own.” The marriage fell apart quickly. In 1976, Matouš following an invitation by GM Eduard Meduna and Špaček started playing in the 1st Czechoslovak League for Tesla Karlin, named after a government-owned company that would employ Mario Matouš for many years.

The company had no relation to Elon Musk’s American company of the similar name, despite both being named after Nikola Tesla and producing electronics. In fact, the Czechoslovak Tesla (Tesla a.s.), as we read in Wikipedia, produced nearly all electronics in the country until 1989 (including military), and in 2010 (now as Tesla Holding a.s.) after legal battles agreed to a peaceful coexistence with Musk’s Tesla Motors, Inc. (later Tesla, Inc.).

From 1980 to 1990 the TJ Spofa Prague became the club where Matouš played before turning mostly to chess composition, playing practical games only for fun. The foundations were laid with the publication of the first study in 1968 already, and around the same time he gained a commendation in the 1967 Rubinstein Memorial tourney for endgame studies, which however was published in April 1969. As a documentation of the already talented beginnings, his first published study is replayable in Vlasák’s article listed above (Kg5/Kg7) where you can also find another great success, the “Study of the Year 2007”, i.e. the study that was found to be the most suited for a general public.

Špaček and Matouš lived in an apartment together for a while, with Matouš proving his cooking skills but showing first signs of depression already. Once, he disappeared for days and then turned up with a young woman whom he took to his room — to play chess. This reminded of a song by Iván Mládek: “Vyklepnul jsem Denisu, 6:0, 6:0 v tenisu” (“I knocked out Denise, 6:0, 6:0 in tennis”). Of course, to someone who doesn’t understand Czech, the song, played by Mládek on a banjo-like instrument, sounds like a country song.

When he got composing, according to EG, days and nights without sleeping, drinking or eating could go by, but the Czeeh text reduces this to “next day” after writing the idea down (not telling how long he didn’t sleep, eat or drink), where Matouš just concentrated on his study, trying dozens of different settings, and eventually reaching a conclusion. Despite this, sometimes small mistakes slipped into the studies, as they do for every composer. The results were often “precise constructions in a classical and economical style” (Vlasák). The following ending of a study shows such an idea, but the prior introduction (not shown here) later had to be corrected by adding a black pawn on a2. We keep the original move count, starting at the fifth move.

After 5.♖de2+ ♚d1 6.♖a2! the checkmate threat leads to four different Nowotny interferences, i.e. a piece is sacrificed on a line (rank or file) and diagonal intersection so only one of the two threats can be defended against if capturing:

6...♚e1 7.♖g2 ♜f8 8.♗f6!, or 7...♜g8 8.♗g7!

6...♚c1 7.♗d4!

6...♜e8 7.♗e5!

6...♜f8 7.♗f6!

A great drawback of the works was that the knowledge of foreign compositions was limited, leading to sometimes less original settings. Within the energetic periods of composing, Matouš in such cases often created works that unknowingly improved his predecessors significantly. Ignoring the FIDE Albums (see my September column), the official titles of IM and GM for chess composition came not within his reach as they are tied to publications in the anthology. He was however multiple times Czechoslovakian or Czech master and obtained the FM title for chess composition.

Other interests included philosophy, in which he corresponded with his friendly composing rival Michal Hlinka. The German cultural critic Friedrich Nietzsche was a favorite of Matouš, and so he also asked about what beauty or art is, coming to the conclusion that it is “impossible to measure, weigh or prove the existence of Beauty. But I hope there is still a rich aesthetic feeling in ordinary man. Just in this I see a chance for a real artist to approach absolute Beauty.” (Letter from Matouš to Hlinka, as reproduced in EG 194.)

Having spent most of his life with his girlfriend in Prague, Matouš encountered issues in finding a job when the communist regime he hated fell. Eventually an occupation as night security guard turned up. Vlasák believes in his article that while Matouš remained at the highest compositional level, he became hackneyed and received more honourable mentions than prizes. In addition, our protagonist in 2009 fell ill with depression, and led an unhealthy lifestyle that shortly after his girlfriend’s death also culminated in the demise of Mario Matouš on July 4th 2013.

Let us close with the memory that (since 2017 GM for chess composition) Ladislav Salai jr. shared in the Czech article: After practical games, the team would sit down in a pub in Brno, and order two things: Something to eat from the pub and something to solve from Matouš.

Similarly, I hope the selection below will satisfy your hunger for beauty.

Thanks go to Emil Vlasák for providing photos. His articles are used as source: Zemřel Mario Matouš in Československý šach 7/2013 (with Ivan Hausner and Jaroslav Polášek) as well as the obituary in EG 194 which seems to be an abridged version of the Czech text, similarly his article on ChessBase.

A University of Cambridge graduate was killed in the deadly stabbing near London Bridge, reports say

Jack Merritt, 25, worked as a course coordinator for Learning Together, a group linked to the University of Cambridge hosting the event at Fishmonger's Hall where the attack began.
Authorities have not officially confirmed the names of the victims pending formal identification from the coroner, Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner Neil Basu said.
Suspect in deadly stabbing near London Bridge identified
Merritt's father, David Merritt, acknowledged his son's death on a tweet Saturday.
"You were a beautiful spirit who always took the side of the underdog," David Merritt wrote. He has since then deleted the message.
Friends of Merritt took on social media to mourn him, describing him as a caring young man, who was committed to social justice and equality, and who worked for a better justice system.
Merritt and a woman, who has not been named by authorities, were fatally stabbed by terror suspect Usman Khan on Friday.
Three others, a man and two women, were wounded in the attack and were still hospitalized on Saturday.
Khan had been attending an event for alumni celebrating the five-year anniversary of Learning Together, police said. The group, a network of academics and criminal justice organizations, is affiliated with the University of Cambridge's Institute of Criminology, the website for the event said.
He was shot dead by police after he left the building and went onto the bridge, where a group of bystanders tackled him to the ground on the north side of London Bridge.

Mayor praised heroes who subdued attacker

The attacker was confronted by several people who sprayed liquid from a fire extinguisher and wielded an apparent narwhal tusk that was taken off the Fishmonger's Hall.
The British Transport Police confirmed on Saturday that one of the bystanders was a plain clothes officer. They said the officer disarmed Khan of one of two knives he is believed to have had strapped onto his hand.
Acts of heroism emerge after London terror attack
London Mayor Sadiq Khan said the group used anything they could find to stop the attacker from harming others.
"And I think what we should do is reflect on the fact that these people ignored all the advice they're given, which is to run away from danger, to look after your own safety. And instead ran towards danger to make sure others were safe. And I'm just so incredibly proud as the mayor, and I think all of us should be proud of our fellow citizens," the mayor told reporters on Saturday.
They mayor said a Londoner of Polish origin was among the group of people who intervened.
"We saw yesterday one example of the worst of humanity -- the actions of this terrorist," Sadiq Khan said. "But we saw many examples of the best of humanity. And when I say the best of us, I include EU citizens. And what we saw yesterday was ordinary citizens, including Londoners who are of Polish origin -- he's a Londoner -- who acted in an extraordinary way. And I'm pretty proud of him."

Questions emerged about attacker's criminal history

Khan, the attacker, had been released from prison last year with an ankle monitor after serving a less than half of a 16-year sentence.
In 2010, he was among a group arrested in London over an "al Qaeda-inspired plot" and was accused of planning to open a terrorist military training facility under the guise of a madrassa, or educational institution, on land in Kashmir that was owned by his family, court documents said.
This is what we know about London Bridge stabbing suspect Usman Khan
Khan pleaded guilty in 2012 to the charges. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison for his role but was released in December 2018.
The sentencing judge called Khan and two others "more serious jihadis" than the rest of their group, adding that in his view they would remain a "significant risk" to the public, even after their sentence.
In order to adequately protect "the safety of the public", the judge said Khan's release on license could only be "decided upon, at the earliest, at the conclusion of the minimum term" in prison, and imposed an indeterminate sentence on his release.
Britain's Parole Board said in a statement on Saturday that he appeared "to have been released automatically on license," without a parole hearing.
The UK government is looking at the sentences handed out to the most violent offenders, Home Office minister Brandon Lewis said in a TV interview with CNN affiliate ITN on Saturday.

Gorbachev: Russia and US must avoid 'hot war'

Less well remembered was a meeting that followed just a few weeks later between Gorbachev and US President George H.W. Bush off the Mediterranean island of Malta, where the two leaders tried to come to grips with how quickly history had changed.
"Look at how nervous we are," Gorbachev told Bush, according to a Soviet transcript.
"We were shocked by the swiftness of the changes that unfolded," Bush said.
Gorbachev and US President George H.W. Bush met in 1989 for talks signaling the official end of the Cold War.
Thirty years later, some of the top issues discussed at the Malta summit still carry particular resonance -- arms control, Afghanistan and the difficulty building trust between Moscow and Washington.
On the day CNN sat down with Gorbachev in Moscow, President Donald Trump paid a surprise visit to US troops in Afghanistan, where he announced that peace talks with the Taliban have restarted. Like the Soviet Union three decades ago, the US is trying to broker an exit from Afghanistan while ensuring that the central government in Kabul does not collapse.
As Trump seeks an exit from Afghanistan, Moscow steps in
Back in 1989, the United States and the Soviets were on opposite sides of the conflict, with Washington supporting mujahideen fighters trying to topple the government of Afghan President Mohammad Najibullah's Soviet-backed regime. But just over two years later, the USSR collapsed, assistance to the Kabul government dried up and Najibullah's government fell.
Asked what lessons could be drawn from the withdrawal of Soviet troops, Gorbachev said: "They must be withdrawn. That is the main lesson. You know, it's like a match. The match is lit, a fire spreads. And these clashes, when the leading, largest countries in this conflict become ever more involved, they are dangerous for all nations."
Russia began its withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan at the end of the 1980s.
The fall of the Berlin Wall was preceded by another pivotal moment: The signing of the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty in 1987.
That pillar of arms control effectively fell apart this year, after the United States formally withdrew and the Russian government said it had been consigned to the trash can.
Asked about the demise of the treaty that he signed alongside US President Ronald Reagan, Gorbachev expressed a hope that such arms control agreements could be revived.
"All the agreements that are there are preserved and not destroyed," he said. "But these are the first steps towards destruction of [that which] must not be destroyed in any case. Therefore, if this path goes further, then everything is possible. This must not be allowed."
30 years after the Berlin Wall fell, America is less free
The ultimate goal of arms control, he added, must be to get rid of nuclear weapons completely.
That, however, seems a more remote possibility, given the enduring mistrust between Moscow and Washington. US-Russian relations are now at their worst since the Cold War, but Gorbachev expressed hope that it would be possible for Washington and Moscow to find a way to prevent a "hot war" in the future.
"I think this should be avoided," Gorbachev said, when asked about whether the world was entering a dangerous new era of multipolar rivalry between states. "It's good that already all over the world there is a conversation and people are talking, people are reacting, and this is the most important thing.
HBO's recent series "Chernobyl" examined Gorbachev's decision making during the nuclear disaster.
"Speakers and politicians, people understand that this, the New Cold War, must not be allowed. This might turn out to be a hot war that could mean the destruction of our entire civilization. This must not be allowed."
That Cold War, of course, has been a subject of intense pop culture interest, especially following the release of HBO's acclaimed "Chernobyl" TV series.
Asked if he had seen the series, Gorbachev said no, but suggested his decision-making as Soviet leader at the time of the 1986 nuclear disaster may have been misrepresented.
Chernobyl and the dangerous ground of 'dark tourism'
"I have not seen it, but I know in detail" the Chernobyl story, he said. "The most important thing I will say that as a result we have studied all the reasons [for the disaster]. All these conclusions were given to all other countries. These findings are a lesson to everyone. They say, 'Why you were silent for several days?' But I say it was exactly like I said before, not the other way around. We did not understand what had happened."
Gorbachev is the subject of a "Meeting Gorbachev," a documentary by filmmaker Werner Herzog that goes into wide release in Russia on December 5. The reception of the film is something to watch: Gorbachev is not revered in Russia in the way he was in the West, and his name brings associations of the painful Soviet collapse that still hangs over Russian society and culture.
For the 88-year-old former president, it seems, the past is not yet past.

German Catholics' celibacy debate could lead to schism with Vatican

The German Bishops Conference and the Central Committee of German Catholics will start a two-year process of reckoning and reform on Sunday, the first day of Advent. The meeting comes in response to damning revelations of sexual abuse in the church.
They will discuss issues that experts have identified as having contributed to the scandal: "priestly life," including celibacy; the position of women within the church; sexuality and sexual morale of the Catholic church; and the power and the control of the power within the church.
The outcome of the debate will not change Catholic doctrine. However, the plan to modernize the church in Germany has attracted criticism from the Vatican: some of the most senior officials, including Pope Francis, have expressed concerns that the conference could ultimately lead to the fragmentation of the church.
A nun just read the riot act to Catholic bishops over clergy sex abuse
The push to launch reforms was sparked by a shocking report into sexual abuse published last year. The Catholic Church in Germany admitted to total of 3,677 cases of child sex abuse by the clergy between 1946 and 2014 in the report commissioned by the Bishops' Conference.
More than half of the victims were 13 years old or younger. The majority were boys and in most cases, the abuse took place over lengthy periods of time. Every sixth case involved a rape and at least 1,670 clergy were involved.
The report shook the church in Germany to its core and prompted calls for action. At a meeting in the spring, a majority of German bishops voted to start a reform process to ensure nothing like this happens again.
Christian Bauer, a theology professor at the Innsbruck University, said the issues the conference will discuss are not new.
"How is power checked and balanced in the church, how can we go beyond the homophobic and misogynist church... all these are old issues, but they became urgent in a new way since the abuse crisis have started," he told CNN.
UN suspends work with Catholic charity in CAR after CNN investigation into pedophile priest
But the prospect of reopening issues that have been settled for centuries is a scary thought for the Vatican. The situation escalated so much that Pope Francis employed one of the most powerful -- and rarely used -- pontiff's tools and wrote an open letter to the German people, urging them to preserve the unity of the church.
Archbishop Nikola Eterović, the Vatican's Apostolic Nuncio to Germany, said this was the first time a pope has written specifically to the German people since the encyclical of Pius XI in 1937. That famous document denounced the Nazi regime.
But the German Catholics are pressing ahead, insisting that any decision taken during the Synodal Assembly will be binding.
"The idea is that this is not just another forum where everyone just talks and no decisions are taken. At the end there will be a vote and the (result of the) vote will be given to the Holy See, to Pope Francis, to take further action," said Ulrich Lehner, a theology professor at the University of Notre Dame.
Matthias Kopp, the spokesperson for the German Bishops' Conference, told CNN the clash with the Vatican was mostly down to a misunderstanding.
Catholic priests in Colorado sexually abused at least 166 children in the past 70 years
"There will not be a revolution coming from Germany to Rome," he said. Asked what would happen if the Vatican refused to act on the recommendations that come from Germany, Kopp said more discussions would follow.
However, he admitted that some of the issues that will be discussed are controversial and that many cannot be decided on the national level.
"That is a problem of the process," Kopp said. "But, you know, if we stay here in our offices and we are doing nothing, I think that would be ridiculous... and there was, of course, a very hard discussion and of course, we are informing Rome, but we need this open space [for] discussions in Germany."
The Bishops' Conference is hoping to find allies in its quest. It has invited representatives of the church from neighboring countries. And, while shrinking, the German church is still seen as powerful -- and rich.
"Numbers wise, the German church is no longer very important as a global player in Catholicism, it is also no longer that important as a theological powerhouse, where they are important, mostly, is in financial power," said Lehner.
"If you consider the Holy See being in quite a bit of financial disarray, you can easily see how this increases the German influence to an unhealthy degree," he added.
Cardinal Pell to take fight against child sex conviction to the High Court
It's not just the sexual abuse scandal that the church in Germany needs to address. The number of German believers has been plunging in recent years. Older parishioners are dying out, but on top of that, tens of thousands of others are actively leaving the church each year. The number of young people choosing to get confirmed is dropping.
"We have to do something ... many people are leaving the church because there is no trust in the church, we have to give answers," Kopp said, adding that in the "early 21st century, we cannot work in the same way we worked maybe 30 years ago.
Lehner is skeptical the conference will help reverse the trend. "The church in Germany is in such a rapid decline that the Bishops really are like headless chicken, I'm sorry to use that image, but I think it's true ... they're realizing that their entire system is collapsing, and they really don't know how to address it."

NFL free agent Terrelle Pryor stabbed in his Pittsburgh apartment

Pryor, who played quarterback at Ohio State, arrived at Pittsburgh's Mercy Hospital around 4:30 a.m. Saturday, and police officers learned he'd been stabbed during an altercation in an apartment in the city's north side, the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police said.
Pryor was reportedly in stable condition after surgery, CNN affiliate WTAE reported.
Police reports quoted witnesses as saying Pryor was stabbed after an argument with a woman turned into a physical struggle in the kitchen of his residence at the Heinz Loft apartment complex.
After consulting with the Allegheny County District Attorney's Office, police arrested Shalaya Briston, 24, of Munhall, Pennsylvania, on charges of criminal attempted homicide and aggravated assault, the bureau said in a statement.
Pryor, 30, a Pittsburgh resident, faces a charge of simple assault, according to police.
The two suspects are "believed to be mutual combatants in this incident," police said.
According to the arrest complaints for Briston and Pryor, the two jointly hold a lease on an apartment in the Heinz Loft complex. A witness also told police that Briston and Pryor have been dating for about a year, according to the complaint.
Three women, including Briston, drove Pryor to the hospital, the police report said. Investigators found a trail of blood from the apartment to a vehicle registered in Pryor's name, the report said. A woman also sustained injuries in the dispute, police said.
"The Pittsburgh Bureau of Police understands there is a heightened level of interest in this case, but Police will not be conducting interviews or holding a news conference at this time," the statement said.
CNN's attempts to determine whether Pryor and Briston have legal representation weren't immediately successful.
Since entering the league in 2011, Pryor has played for the Oakland Raiders, Cleveland Browns, Washington Redskins, New York Jets and Buffalo Bills, according to NFL.com.
Pryor, a native of Jeannette, Pennsylvania, was released by the Jacksonville Jaguars before the start of this season, according to NFL.com. He played in two games for Buffalo and six for the Jets in 2018.
