Dave Parker again falls short of National Baseball Hall of Fame in Modern Era vote - The Cincinnati Enquirer

Former Cincinnati Reds great and Reds Hall of Famer Dave Parker won't join the National Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown in 2020.

Parker was among nine former Major League Baseball players and one executive on the 10-name Modern Baseball Era ballot that a committee considered for election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Ted Simmons and Marvin Miller were elected, and will be inducted next year.

Parker also was on the ballot with Dwight Evans, Steve Garvey, Tommy John, Don Mattingly, Thurman Munson, Dale Murphy and Lou Whitaker.

Parker, raised in Cincinnati, graduated from Courter Tech High School in 1970 and still lives in Cincinnati. He has worked often with young players at the Reds Urban Youth Academy in Roselawn.

Parker hit .281 with 107 home runs and 432 RBIs in four seasons for the Reds from 1984 through 1987. He was a two-time All-Star for the Reds and finished second in National League MVP voting in 1985 and fifth in 1986.

He hit .290 with 339 home runs and 526 doubles in 19 big-league seasons. He won the National League MVP award for the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1978.

Parker revealed in 2013 that he was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, and his Cobra Classic Golf Outing raises funds for Parkinson's research. He was inducted into the Reds Hall of Fame in 2014.

Parker's remarkable Major League Baseball career and battle with Parkinson's disease will be the subjects of a 90-minute "MLB Network Presents" documentary titled "The Cobra at Twilight," set to debut on Thursday (Dec. 12) at 8 p.m. on MLB Network.

More from a release from the National Baseball Hall of Fame:

Any candidate who receives votes on 75 percent of the ballots cast by the 16-member Modern Baseball Era Committee will earn election to the National Baseball Hall of Fame and will be inducted in Cooperstown on July 26, 2020, along with any electees who emerge from the 2020 Baseball Writers’ Association of America election, to be announced on Jan. 21, 2020.

The Modern Baseball Era is one of four Era Committees, each of which provide an avenue for Hall of Fame consideration to managers, umpires and executives, as well as players retired for more than 15 seasons.
