According to the announcement from the US Mission to the European Union, Secretary of State Mike Pompeo "has instructed the Chief of Protocol to take the necessary measures to effect this reinstatement."
Earlier this year, the Trump administration downgraded the European Union's diplomatic status from a state to an international organization. The shift was a reversal of a decision made in 2016 by the Obama administration.
The downgrade by the Trump administration riled Brussels, deepening a growing rift and appalling diplomats in Washington who decried the move as "amateur" and "unprofessional."
