"David is a staggering editorial talent, with tremendous leadership abilities and deep experience in the specialness of this place," Pam Wasserstein, CEO of New York Media, said in an internal memo announcing the move on Wednesday.
"After twelve years at New York, he has edited almost 300 features, some of our most outstanding editorial packages, and much of our longform political coverage," Wasserstein said.
In his current role, Haskell has also worked on brand extensions like events, podcasts and television shows.
The appointment came one day after Moss announced his exit plans. Moss said he approached Wasserstein last fall about stepping down in March.
"There are many reasons, but they pretty much boil down to this: editors ought to have term-limits," Moss wrote in a note to staff on Tuesday. "Experience is good, but after a while every institution needs a blood transfusion."
Haskell's name was immediately floated as a likely candidate for the job.
He will take over as editor on April 1, so there will be a two-and-a-half month long transition period.
Moss said in a statement that Haskell is a "superb editor" and a "natural and proven entrepreneur, and he will be a perfect partner to Pam Wasserstein going forward."
Haskell co-founded Topic Magazine in 2002 and joined New York as an editor in 2007.
"We are living through an extraordinary time in American life, one eerily well suited to New York's strengths and obsessions," he said in a statement on Wednesday. It's now my job to make sure we cover it all with the intelligence and creativity our readers have come to expect."
